The expression on Noah’s face confused Emily. He looked hurt. Had she misread him?

His appearance quickly changed to one of fierce determination. “I can handle it, but if it makes you uncomfortable, please, by all means, talk to her.”

She sensed that something between them had shifted. “I will.”

He put a few more feet of distance between them then paused. “If you want to draft a letter for my nonpaying clients, you may. I’ll take a look at whatever you have and make adjustments if necessary.”

Noah left Emily sitting there in silence with nothing but her thoughts rumbling through her head. His tone was sharp and edgy, without the warm friendliness she was accustomed to.

Between patients, Emily worked on a letter, but it didn’t come easy. She typed a paragraph and deleted most of it then started over. No matter what she put on the page, it sounded harsh or trite. It was much more difficult than she thought it would be. Maybe she should leave things as they were. After all, this wasn’t a permanent job for her. As soon as Jillian got back and she figured out what she wanted to do with her life, she’d be gone.

Emily’s stomach knotted at the very thought of moving on. She liked it here. Aunt Sherry and Uncle Mel made her feel like she was home. Their farm felt safe. West Virginia was beautiful. Now that she thought about it, working at Noah’s Ark gave her a sense of purpose. This was nothing like what she’d expected when she first arrived.

Okay, now that she had those thoughts behind her, she’d write a killer letter. She turned back to face the computer and cranked out a letter in half an hour. It would have been done sooner if she hadn’t had to answer the phone a dozen times. She typed Noah’s name at the end then sat back and read it. Not bad. A few minor tweaks and it came across friendly but firm.

The next time Noah stuck his head out the door to see if his patient had arrived, Emily motioned for him to come and take a look at the letter. She’d printed it and had it on the counter, waiting.

He picked it up and slowly read it before looking up. “Not bad. Would you mind handing me a pen? I want to make a couple of changes, but you did a very nice job.”

When he handed the paper back to her, she saw that he’d only changed a couple of insignificant things, but he didn’t alter a single major point. She caught him staring at her.

“You did a very nice job, Emily.” His voice had softened a little, but it still wasn’t back to the same friendly tone he’d had before their talk. “I think this might get some results without insulting anyone.”

“Thank you.” Emily swallowed hard. “Would you like for me to print it and get it out this week?”

“Sure, if you can. I don’t want you stressing over it though.
